Welcome to your definitive guide about Gold's Gym! We put together our wealth of knowledge right here, making sure you have a comprehensive understanding of this popular gym chain.

Amenities offered at Gold's Gym

Gold's Gym is one of the largest, longest running gym chains in the country. We think of them as the classic, OG strength building gym. But—while much has changed, much also remains at Gold's. What do we mean? You'll still get all the classic essentials (free weights, machines, cardio equipment), but know that they also have:

  • Pools at 1/5 of locations
  • Turf/functional workout areas (a little over 53% of gyms)
  • Hot tub, tanning, and baketball!

You can see how they've branched out a bit, moving away a bit from the old 'muscle-bound' attitude in years past. Some amenities you won't find at a Gold's though:

  • Pickleball

Of course, all your standard gym offerings are there:

  • Cardio machines (treadmills, stair-masters, ellipticals)
  • Strength machines of various sorts
  • Free weights with benches

What we love about Gold's Gym

One of the original fitness chains in the country continues to serve their members well. We love how they've adapted and grown their brand, services and amenities to fit the modern fitness lifestyle.

  • The story, tradition and attitude of the brand. Gold's has been around forever—with a lasting reputation as a place to go to get results.

  • The huge variety of amenities and services—something we didn't expect from them. While not all locations, this chain offers saunas, steam rooms, pools, childcare, basketball, tanning, racquetball, turf, and even the cardio cinema!

  • Gold's is one of the few gym chains out there to offer towel service—an amenity that's been removed by nearly all others. This is a welcome addition to a sweaty workout!

What we wish Gold's Gym would improve

Gold's Gym checks off nearly all the boxes for amenities and services that would make most folks ecstatic. Still, would we change one (or three) things? Yes.

  • Just 16 of their locations are open 24-hours-a-day, that's less than 10% of their gyms. With so many people asking us what gyms are open all night—we can't say Gold's offers them many.

  • We count only two locations with massage chairs/services. That feels low (or incorrect, to be honest). We've been on the hunt for a better, confirmed answer but.... see below!

  • They would fix their website. Yes, seriously. Navigating their laggy and slow website is a headache. There is also a huge lack of photos for each location, so it's been tough getting you, our loyal readers, all the best info on Gold's gym.

How much is Gold's Gym?

Did you know that Gold's Gym locations are franchised? Why does that matter? Well—different owners mean different pricing options to join their gyms. And boy—there's a huge range for what you'll pay for a membership.

  • First off - There is no national, consistent membership level. Usually a gym will have different tiers like "Basic", "Premium" or "Elite" to better differentiate what access or amenity level you'll get. Not with Gold's unfortunately.
  • Second - Pricing between these 'tiers' varies wildly. That means enrollment fees, processing fees, first and last dues, plus annual fees are different for the 6 locations we looked at. Contract lengths are also inconsistent, so comparing one Gold's at a 12-month contract to a month-to-month setup from another will be tricky. Don't get us started on one group that decided to charge bi-weekly (vs monthly).
  • Third - Amenities matter, and while generally aligned, some groups will have you paying top tier prices for a budget-type of membership that won't include much.

Why does this all matter? It becomes difficult to judge accurately, if Gold's as a whole, or even your individual Gold's is a good deal or not. Let's kick it off with what we've seen:

  • $14.95 to $60/month will get you in the door for most Gold's locations. This will come with all the basic gym amenities: free weights, machines, cardio, etc.
    • This range differs because at the Anaheim Town Square location, it's $14.95 to start but $99 to enroll. You'll also pay first and last right away, with an annual fee of $49, 45 days after starting.
    • The comparable in Gilroy, California would be $60/month, but $169 to enroll, on promo for $1. You only get access to 6 local gyms. Unfortunately you pay a $69 "processing fee" plus $69 annual fee, this time 90 days after starting.
  • $39.99 to $55.98 is kinda a second tier we've seen. That'll get  you unlimited group fitness at the Highlands Meadows club in Texas, and happens to be month-to-month with $0 initiation. Some groups have this tier with multi-club access, plus pools and saunas.
    • Daytona Beach, Florida may be the best $35/monthly Gold's membership so far. With a 12-month contract, there is $0 to enroll, and just $1 to join today. We like how there is multi-club access, unlimited classes, and even complimentary kids club.
  • $420 to $450 paid in full plans do exist, but not everywhere. We saw this more common on East Coast Gold's locations. $420 at Daytona Beach is actually 12+3 free months, while $450 in Long Island is just a single year.

What a jumbled mess of spaghetti. If Gold's is on your list of gyms to consider, we recommend having the competitor's site side-by-side. You'll want to see the differences between membership term, initial fees, annual and "hidden" fees.

  • Anywhere from $49 to $69 for annual fees at Gold's, with that charge coming 45, 55, 60 or even 90 days after joining.
  • Initiation fees have been as high as $169, but also $49 and 29. It is often $1 or $0 though, since locations are on a promotional deal. Be aware that some gyms charge first and last dues, some charge last dues only, and some even pro-rate the first month.

Gym Pricing Tiers Explained

There are 3-4 main pricing tiers that nearly all gyms across the country fall into. Generally, higher prices = more amenities and services.

$10 - $25 /month — Value

  • Standard/basic equipment
  • Cardio machines: treadmills, ellipticals
  • Various free-weights, strength machines

$15 - $30 /month — High Value Low Price

  • All the above, plus a few have saunas or pools
  • Massage and/or Tanning options
  • Expect newer style amenities like Olympic lifting platforms, functional turf and cardio cinema.

$25 - $65 Monthly — Mid-Tier

  • All the above, placed in larger facilities and spaces. Pools, saunas and steam are a must.
  • Basketball courts and childcare were the main amenities.
  • These are your "older" more aged "big-box" gyms, often with hundreds of locations spanning the country

$65 and up  — Boutique/Specialty/Luxury

  • Highest end cardio equipment with advanced, expensive machines
  • Specialty group training and fitness classes
  • Luxury or boutique locker rooms, workspaces and lounges

"Is this gym worth it?"

Use our guides to help inform and educate what a gym can offer your fitness lifestyle. Only you can truly decide if a gym is worth it!

As one of the most iconic gym brands—worldwide—Gold's gym will always be a place to consider for your health and wellness needs.

Reminder that our goal here on our site is to provide you the best information about each individual gym—amenities, services, reviews, photos, pricing—so you can compare and make that leap. Unfortunately, Gold's is hands-down the trickiest and most complicated in the way they price their memberships. The lack of consistency and clarity in their plans—and of course what you pay—simply won't allow us to give a blanket "Is Gold's worth it."

Enough about that: here's what we do like from what we've seen.

  • Widely varied amenities and offerings. Your local Gold's may have a pool, sauna, unlimited classes and even racquetball or a cardio cinema. Thought they were just heavy weights? Think again.
  • About half their gyms have steam and sauna options. These are two popular amenities that our readers ask for. Many of the smaller gym chains don't have one, or either.
  • Childcare, basketball and open-24-hours are all present, too!                                                                         Plus, they're at multiple locations, in large enough numbers, that it's worth a look to see what your local club offers.

So, we'll leave it at that. Ultimately we do like how they've branched out past the muscle-bound stigma to give you more varied options. Is Gold's gym worth it? TBD!
