Planet Fitness staffs their clubs 24/7. That means no matter the hour, there will be a Planet employee on-hand. (We only mention this because other 24/7 chains such as Anytime Fitness are unstaffed. They operate like hotels where you 'beep' in with a key-fob or card to workout)

Is a staffed or unstaffed gym better than the other? We don't think it matters too much, but a staffed location:

• Gives you peace of mind that someone is nearby, if anything at all is needed.
• In an emergency situation (earthquake, fire, health, accident), a trained employee can lend a hand or even alert you to the issue.
• Can help with general issues. That's for login/membership, purchasing retail items, broken equipment or even changing the channel on tv's.

Running a gym that's open all night long comes with some challenges. Here are the top issues we've seen across the industry:

• Is there enough demand from the members? Can't be open all night if nobody wants to workout. This comes first.
• What safety requirements are needed to maintain a gym in case something goes wrong?
• Does the gym have enough team members to support all-night-hours? Smaller gym chains may not have enough employees.
• Is the city/county in which the club resides "OK" with the hours? Certain areas don't allow businesses to be open past a certain time.

Planet Fitness is also a franchise-based gym chain, so the decision to stay open later may fall on the owner's take (vs corporate executives). It's just another layer to either help or hurt a club's chances of being open all night.

Unfortunately we just don't know. However, if they wanted to, they have the exact playbook to make it work. Multiple locations of theirs have already proven both the demand and inner procedures.

Operating hours vary at all of their locations, but the most common we've seen:

• Monday: 5:00 AM – 10:00 PM
• Tuesday: 5:00 AM – 10:00 PM
• Wednesday: 5:00 AM – 10:00 PM
• Thursday: 5:00 AM – 10:00 PM
• Friday: 5:00 AM – 10:00 PM
• Saturday: 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM
• Sunday: 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM

This is a pretty strong all-day offering, with most folks coming in for the first workouts at 5:00 AM. Other gym chains have some locations that don't open til' 7:00 AM—ouch.

So, Planet Fitness does offer 24/7 hours, but not at all of their locations. We commend many of their locations as they have pretty strong opening hours that'll take care of most folks' needs.
