Tell me more about pools at Planet Fitness! Do they have them?
Sorry! Planet Fitness does not have pools, at any of their locations.
This is a big deal: Planet Fitness is the second largest gym chain in the country, at over 2,300 locations. For most folks in the United States, you can bet that they have a club (or two, three!) nearby to you. Unfortunately, no Planet Fitness locations have a pool.
How do you know for sure?
A bunch of hard work! We checked every single one of their 2,000+ gym pages, and even poked through the Facebook and Instagram pages. Finally, we connected with their customer care team: Nope, no pool at Planet Fitness.
Why doesn't Planet Fitness have pools?
Planet is one of the largest gym chains in the country, so not offering pools is a big deal. Locations are found in all corners of the USA (and beyond), so we too have asked, why doesn't Planet have pools? Our best guesses:
- It would drive up membership costs. So many different things need to happen to install and maintain a pool properly. We're talking about cleaning, chemicals, and certifying that all is properly running correctly. That requires an enormous initial (and ongoing!) cost—that will have to be paid by members.
- Planet might be the biggest/loudest/most prominent gym chain touting memberships at a low $10 in many locations. Raising prices isn't gonna work. They are a budget-oriented gym chain with members who won't support the higher cost for a pool.
- There isn't alot of space, or enough space at their locations. Planet Fitness clubs are typically 20,000 square feet—not tiny, but not enough to support a proper pool. Gym chains with this amenity usually are around 40,000 square feet in size. Plus, you can see below for how they decide to fill up their locations.
- Pools aren't a primary focus for this gym chain. Planet focuses their efforts on offering:
- A Judgement-Free workout at value pricing
- Fitness Training (small group fitness) areas
- Cardio and strength training zones
- Tanning and massage chairs (via their Black Card)
You can see how Planet gyms enhance their members' experience with different options—there's simply no space for a pool.
Will Planet Fitness have pools in the future?
Don't bet on it. Adding a swimming pool to an existing Planet Fitness club is far too complicated, expensive, and simply not-profitable for the company.
Sometimes we can make a case (and even lobby/recommend!) to different gym chains on amenities that people may want to see more of.... but not in this case. Adding pools to Planet Fitness locations just doesn't make any sense.
Closing thoughts
If this gym chain is on your list to join, take advantage of their other amenities, and value pricing.
